ASVO is a non-profit NGO which places volunteers in Costa Rica’s national parks and protected areas. ASVO’s objective is to improve the conditions and amount of volunteer work performed at a national and international level. ASVO places volunteers in national parks and other areas protected by the Ministry of Environment and Energy all over the country.
Volunteers must be of age 18 or above with minimum education of high school. Volunteers with the following special skills are preferred for the placement:- Forestry Environmental Science Biology Veterinary Science Volunteers can assist by doing following tasks:-
1. Cleaning of animal cages.
2. Feeding animals.
3. Helping the veterinarian with various tasks.
4. Construction and maintenance of the park’s trails.
5. Collection of leaves on trails and around park’s facilities.
6. Cutting and collecting grass.
7. General maintenance.
8. Helping in the butterfly farm.
Location description
This is the northernmost region of Pacific rainforest remaining in Costa Rica, and is the beginning of the transition zone into the tropical dry forests of the northwest. Carara is one of Costa Rica’s most popular National Parks, in large part due to its proximity to San José.
Historical significance of the area
Carara was once part of the huge Finca La Coyola, one of the biggest haciendas in Costa Rica. The Cervantes family protected the area for generations before the land passed to the National Parks Service. The land was expropriated in 1977 as part of an agrarian resettlement program for landless campesinos; in April 1979, 4,700 hectares were pared off to form a biological reserve, which was elevated to national park status in 2000. Carara takes its name from the Huetar Indian word for crocodile.
What is the weather like?
It is always hot and humid in the forests of Carara. Even during the drier season from late December through April when there is significantly less rain, transpiration keeps the humidity under the canopy near saturation. The wettest months are August to October when the trails near the river may at times be impassable because of flooding.
